Gambling grew in August in Atlantic City, the seaside gaming resort in New Jersey. With a fifth weekend -- rather than the regular sets of Saturdays and
Sundays -- and lovely weather for most of the month, revenues inched up
by about 1 percent over August 2007.
The increase of sales of 0.7 goes to $468.3 million. Slot machine revenue was virtually unchanged from a year ago at $323.4 million. Table gaming revenue was $145 million, an increase of 2.3 percent. Mark Juliano, chief executive officer of Trump Entertainment Resorts, said the extra weekend helped account for the positive month, but said the bigger story was the benefit of having additional hotel rooms. Both the Borgata and Harrah's added hundreds of new rooms this year, and the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort will debut its new second hotel tower next week. "We're hoping the same thing happens for us," Juliano said. Casinos typically count on strong summer seasons to bolster revenues. Executives believe the 0.7 percent increase in August may give the resort more hope of ending the year with an overall sales increase. Atlantic City's long-term prospects depend on the resort reinventing itself as a Las Vegas-style overnight tourist destination by adding glitzy hotel towers, upscale retail shops and trendy restaurants, executives say. August's results showed evidence of that at Harrah's Resort and Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which led the market thanks to their recent hotel expansions. Revenue jumped 19.1 percent at Harrah's and was up 10.3 percent at Borgata for the month. Harrah's opened its 960-room Waterfront Tower in March, followed by Borgata's ultra-luxe, 800-room Water Club in June. © Copyright 2008 Gambling Central's material.
