Foxwoods Resorts Casino is looking to up the ante in two arenas: Attracting more Asian clientele and also increase the number of horse races the expansive property features at its race book.
To knock out the proverbial two birds with one racing card, the property has entered into a five year agreement with the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Foxwoods will now be able to simulcast the races the Club sponsors in Asia in Connecticut. Bettors will be able to place bets into the pari-mutuel pool from all bettors around the world, increasing jackpots for those in Connecticut as well as those in Asia. It’s a smart move for the casino resort as its biggest competitor, Mohegan Sun, is also looking to carve out a niche to appeal more to Asian gamblers. Just this week, Mohegan opened Sunrise Square. It’s an expanded Asian gambling area featuring a variety of authentic Asian games, a 1,000 square-foot retail area, a 4,000 square-foot food court specializing in Southeast Asian cuisine and a new bus lobby. The Foxwoods deal with the Hong Kong Jockey Club is a good move since its one of the largest racing organizations in the world. Horse racing is the most popular spectator sport in Hong Kong and through its subsidiaries, the Club is the only authorized operator of horse racing. Initially the betting will concentrate on standard win and “place” betting and “small exotics”. Foxwoods has obtained the exclusive rights in Connecticut to feature these races in their Ultimate Race Book. As one of the world’s largest horse racing organizations, this alliance offers Foxwoods customers exclusive access to some of the world’s most thrilling international horse races in real time. Bets will be placed through the Las Vegas Dissemination Company, the only approved and authorized hub to receive the Hong Kong Jockey Club signal in the United States. The first races will be simulcast starting September 2007. Las Vegas Dissemination Company (LVDC) is the leader for pari-mutuel wagering and race track simulcasting. As the racing industry’s only full-service, race information and off-track-betting hub facility, LVDC is the exclusive pari-mutuel service provider for Nevada’s gaming industry and all major, out-of-state casinos including Atlantis Paradise Island Casino (Bahamas); Cities of Gold (New Mexico); Elite Turf Club (Curacao); Foxwoods Resort Casino (Connecticut); Meskwaki Casino (Iowa) and The Stables (Oklahoma). In all, the company provides common-pooling through its hub into nearly 100 racetracks throughout North America. “We are extremely excited to enter into this exclusive agreement with the world renowned Hong Kong Jockey Club,” said John O’Brien, president of Foxwoods Resort Casino. “This will provide our guests with the chance to see and bet on races they would only be able to see in Hong Kong. Once again Foxwoods offers its patrons yet another superior gaming product and exclusive access to racing excitement that previously could only be had if you traveled halfway around the globe.” “We applaud Foxwoods initiative to be the first to sign an agreement,” said John Gaughan, President of LVDC. “The impact of this deal will reverberate throughout the racing and casino industries world-wide and will enhance the way American race books operate their business. This will mark the first time an American audience will conduct live pari-mutuel commingled wagering on races at the Hong Kong Jockey Club.” “This is a historic moment for fans of horse racing,” said Robert Moretti, Executive Vice President and COO of LVDC. “This strategic partnership places the prestigious Hong Kong Jockey Club on a world-wide stage in front of a global audience at Foxwoods. In the horse racing industry, these races from Hong Kong are on par with the World Series and Super Bowl among Asian bettors.” “Carrying Hong Kong Jockey Club races at Foxwoods will create an entirely new market of players, namely Asians who now reside in the United States who are familiar with the Hong Kong Jockey Club brand but who have never placed a pari-mutuel wager,” said Moretti. © Copyright 2007 Gambling Central's material.
