Alabama Attorney General Troy King said muddled legal language has marked the debate on electronic bingo in Alabama, and the best way to resolve the matter is to put it to a statewide vote, or referendum.

King appeared in Dothan, Ala., this and said he will make the proposal part of the legislative package he plans to push for the upcoming legislative session that begins in four weeks.

King said his earlier, written opinions on electronic bingo at the Country Crossing gave a glimpse of the proposal.

“I have to enforce the laws as they are written. My opinion is that the Houston County Commission -- in awarding a special bingo permit -- exercised the legal authority given to them by the Constitution of this state," said King.

Bingo Permitted

The Attorney General added that he holds the final authority over a gambling task force appointed by Gov Bob Riley recently.

“I retain the ability to superintend or take away any case brought in this state,“ King said.
Surrounded by legislators, King announced 15 bills that he is supporting during the upcoming legislative session.  All 15 have sponsors.

Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Mar¬shall and Autauga County Sheriff Herbie Johnson were with King at the conference.

Though electronic gambling, in the form of bingo, will be expanded, the officials are going to try to reign in illegal activities, like cock fighting, considered animal cruelty under Alabama law. This bill would make it a class C felony to fight cocks, own, train or keep cocks for fighting, keep a cockpit, or promote cock fighting.
