Though Detroit has had legalized gaming for several years, its facilities have been less that spectacular. It’s not that the market doesn’t warrant world class resorts, it’s just the properties that have been open are so-called temporary locations.
Though Detroit has had legalized gaming for several years, its facilities have been less that spectacular. It’s not that the market doesn’t warrant world class resorts, it’s just the properties that have been open are so-called temporary locations.
That’s all changed now as the first Las Vegas style casino has come to town. This week the $800-million MGM Grand Detroit debuted. And the early reports are this is one of the nicest and most sophisticated casino resorts to debut outside the Las Vegas Strip. It has the potential to do for Detroit what the Borgata has done for Atlantic City, revolutionize the gambling and entertainment scene.
“We’ve opened the doors to MGM Grand Detroit and are proud to introduce a new level of amenities and offerings to the Midwest. MGM Grand Detroit will be a draw for many audiences from the business traveler and international visitor, to regional guests and our community with a location that is convenient during the week, and both exciting and accessible for weekend getaways,” said George Boyer, President and COO for MGM Grand Detroit. “We’ve taken the chic of Manhattan and combined it with the sizzle of Las Vegas to create this one-of-a-kind experience for our guests.”
MGM Grand Detroit offers upscale gaming including the latest table games and slots. Guests can enjoy classic favorites or touch up on multi-line video slots, ranging from 1-cent to $100. Ther are more than 90 table games and 16 types of table games ranging from Texas Hold’em and High Tie Blackjack to classic favorites like Pai Gow and Roulette. MGM Grand Detroit also features a premium eight-table poker room in a lavish setting. From Seven Card Stud and Omaha Hi-Lo to Limit and No Limit Hold’em, MGM Grand Detroit spreads cash games of all sizes, 24-hours a day.
The property also has 400 chic and stylish guest rooms, including nine VIP suites and 56 opulent corner suites on the highest floors of the entertainment destination, delivering panoramic views of the Detroit skyline. Rooms feature contemporary interior design by acclaimed hospitality firm Laurence Lee and Associates and some of the most technologically advanced amenities in the country.
The casino is also the first resort to feature world-class restaurants from a variety of celebrity chefs. There are three signature restaurants from Michael Mina and Wolfgang Puck. Two-time James Beard Award-winner Michael Mina brings a new steakhouse concept to Detroit with BOURBON STEAK, featuring a classic menu, inviting bar and modern atmosphere. The menu at BOURBON STEAK celebrates a departure from the ordinary, featuring creative variations of classic steakhouse fare. Mina’s other restaurant is SALTWATER, which features contemporary seafood and refined American cuisine set in an elegant Tony Chi design that celebrates the richness of the sea. SALTWATER showcases Mina’s classic dishes including Lobster Pot Pie, Caviar Parfait, Tartare of Ahi Tuna and Mussel Soufflé. As with Mina’s other restaurants, SALTWATER uses only the highest-quality ingredients: fresh seafood and seasonal produce. Mina’s creative approach to cooking takes guests on a culinary journey of taste sensations with every visit to SALTWATER.
Wolfgang Puck brings his innovative cuisine to Detroit at this signature, namesake restaurant. WOLFGANG PUCK GRILLE is a contemporary version of the classic “bar and grill” featuring modern American cuisine accentuating Puck’s trademark standards for creating incomparable tastes. Conveniently located by the hotel’s entrance and main casino floor, the restaurant features casual as well as sophisticated fine dining that can be enjoyed either as a relaxed, leisurely dining experience or as a comfortable, quick-bite in a spectacular setting created by New York-based visionary designer Tony Chi.
And don’t forget to visit IMMERSE Spa, a 20,000-square-foot, modern-day urban loft designed with nature’s most calming element in mind - water. The lavish, two-level facility includes a full-service spa; six treatment bungalows (including two couples’ suites) set amidst a tranquil rock garden; wet room with Vichy shower; first-class salon; state-of-the-art exercise facility; relaxation lounges; separate vanity areas for men and women featuring a whirlpool and steam room; and a spa boutique.
