The New Hampshire Police Association this week said it will support a proposal for the expansion of gambling that will come before the state legislature later this year, said Somersworth Police Capt. David B. Kretschmar when asked what bill the association favors.

The New Hampshire Police Association's executive and legislative boards met in Somersworth on Jan. 20 where they voted to "support expanded gambling with proper regulatory rules and enforcement," said Kretschmar, the association's leader.

"This isn't something we take lightly. It's the first vote we've taken on this issue, but it's not the first time we've addressed it," Kretschmar said. "Of course, money has something to do with it. Part of the things we look at isn't just how it supports law enforcement. It's also how it affects the state and life in the state."

There is no connection between the board's support for expanded gambling and concern by police officers and other public employees over the future funding of the state retirement system.

"We started to get into the political arena in the last few years and this issue (gambling) is one we looked at," he said.

The association has more than 3,000 members who are employees of most law enforcement agencies across the state, Kretschmar said. They also include retired police officers, and civilians, who can join as associate members. Membership is open to dispatchers, secretaries, record clerks and other civilian employees of police departments all the way up the ranks to chief of police.
