While the Atlantic City market is continuing to suffer record profit declines, there are more new projects on the drawing boards then ever in the city’s 30 year casino history.

The latest entrant is Revel Entertainment Group, which has been planning to bring a multi-billion project to the City by the Sea for several years. Now it appears as if they have the blessing of the City of Atlantic City Planning Board to proceed on its massive beachfront casino entertainment resort to be located on 20 acres of land along the Atlantic City Boardwalk, as well as certain onsite circulation and other infrastructure improvements in connection with the project.

Revel’s application highlighted its plan to develop a facility including two hotel towers with approximately 1,900 rooms each, 150,000 square feet of casino space and 500,000 square feet of dining, retail and entertainment space including a 5,500 seat theater, an expansive health club and spa, meeting space and an outdoor oceanfront beach on approximately one acre. Revel is in the process of determining whether both hotel towers will be completed in the first phase of construction.

According to Kevin DeSanctis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Revel Entertainment, the approval means work can begin on the site to bring this amazing new project to Atlantic City. “This is a significant regulatory step forward in commencing construction of the Company’s resort entertainment casino project. Our plans are nearly complete, we expect to commence footing and foundation work shortly and believe that construction will last approximately 36 months.”
The 20-acre Revel Entertainment development site is one of the largest, most uniform and contiguous properties in Atlantic City and is located at the northern end of the Boardwalk bordered by Oriental, New Jersey and Metropolitan avenues. The site features over 1,000 feet of beach frontage.

Designing the conceptualization of the facility is Arquitectonica, who will define the shape and positioning of the buildings and develop the architectural identity that will distinguish the Revel facility in Atlantic City. The interiors, also by Arquitectonica, are a natural progression of the dynamic architecture. Some of the firm’s current work includes The Four Seasons Resort in Dubai, City of Dreams in Macau, The Gate at Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, Canyon Ranch Resort in Miami and Orchard Scotts in Singapore.

Last month MGM MIRAGE announced it’s a version of its CityCenter concept, a $10 billion mega project now rising on the Las Vegas Strip. This version would be significantly scaled down and cost an estimated $4.5 -$5.5 billion. CityCenter Atlantic City will include three 1,000 room hotels, a retail complex and luxury condominiums. The idea behind CityCenter is to create an entire town where residents and guests can eat, drink, be entertained and shop; all in one place. Condos will be estimated to cost an incredible $1 million to $6 million.

The new complex would be located adjacent to the Borgata in the area’s Marina District on an empty 70 acre plot of land. It has been expected a large development would be on that property since even before the Borgata opened. MGM-MIRAGE owns 50 percent of the Borgata, which has been the city’s most successful casino ever since its debut four years ago.

Finally, On October 18th, the Sands Casino Resort was imploded to make way for a new $2 billion resort. That property, to be built by Pinnacle Entertainment, is set to open that project in 2011. Construction is expected to begin imminently on the site.
