A study released last week by a group called Florida TaxWatch indicates that taxes from Seminole Indian gambling would generate $2.9 billion in tax revenues for the state.

The report was designed to examine the impact on other tax sources from the Seminole gaming compact, a compromise proposal by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R). The proposal would allow the Indian tribe to offer gambling beyond its reservation lands, which are tax-free now. In return, the gambling revenues from the new locales will be taxed by the state.

The new report used estimates of casino revenue from the Tribe’s added Class III gaming provided by House of Representatives’ consultants. The extent to which Seminole revenue replaces non-tribal businesses will determine the overall effect on state and local government tax revenues, the report said.

The study estimates that, as drafted, the compact would result in a state revenue sharing of $2.9 billion over 10 years.
Founded in 1979, Florida TaxWatch is a nonprofit, non-partisan research institute.
