Texas State Senators Rodney Ellis, a Democrat, and Republican John Carona, of Dallas, commented that Texans are taking their money out of state to gamble and casinos should be built closer to home to keep that money here.

A new online poll indicates that more than 70 percent of Texans support legalization of gambling in their state.

The duo said construction of destination casinos could generate $1 billion annually for college scholarships and another $1 billion for road construction.

Their plan, according to news reports, calls for 12 resort casinos statewide and would allow video slot machines at racetracks and wagering on Indian reservations.

State House Speaker Craig Eiland and Rep. Carol Alvarado have introduced legislation to allow casino gambling on islands like Galveston, in large cities and on Indian reservations.

“I think Texans spend way too much money in Louisiana and Nevada and other states that allow gambling,” Alvarado said. “Texans like to gamble. It thinks it ought to stay in Texas."
