Dining on the Strip
By Glenn Haussman
Restaurateurs on the north side of The Las Vegas Strip are fighting back. While the headline hogging southern Strip has been getting repeated accolades during the last five years with two outlets by world renowned Joël Robuchon and Tom Colicchio’s craftsteak at the MGM Mirage, there’s a host of new and established restaurants a little farther up Las Vegas Boulevard ready to challenge all comers’ palates.
Of course there are plenty of celebrity chefs in the mix, but others and earning their culinary cred by serving up exceptionally edible entertainment. So while the modern dining era may have started with big names like Wolfgang Puck, today’s top Las Vegas restaurants do not necessarily require a big name on the door to serve innovative and top quality cuisine. Here are some of our favorites.
Tableau
Mark LoRusso may not be a household name yet, but that’s a good thing. You’ll be in the know by recommending this rising star. Located at Wynn Las Vegas near the uber swanky Tower Suites, this casually elegant restaurant re-jiggers classic American dishes with a fun and fabulous twist. Even breakfast gets a fresh makeover. Dishes such as the Virginia Ham and fig frittata or the Kobe Shortribs and Scrambled Eggs with potato cakes and Béarnaise sauce define LoRusso’s approach. Everything here has been reevaluated. Other highlights include Hudson Valley Foie Gras “Two Ways” with cherry financier, almonds and watercress with its diametrically opposed flavor profiles and the simply elegant Ahi Tuna Wrap with cucumbers, hummus and tabbouleh salad. Weather permitting; suggest the outdoor seating area which looks over the resort’s pool complex. Prices vary wildly depending on course selection. It’s open daily. David Burke
East coast master chef David Burke has opened his first west coast restaurant, David Burke Modern American Cuisine at the Venetian. Diners are surrounded by highly stylized modern design which takes cues from the menu and vice versa. The presentation of the food alone is worth the price of admission. Burke has been heralded for instant classics such as the Crisp & Angry Lobster Cocktail and Cheesecake Lollipop Tree (with bubble gum and whipped cream). Also suggest Wasabi Shrimp Cooked on a Hot River Rock with marinated wasabi flakes or the Pretzel Crusted Crab Cake. Sure the food here is of the utmost quality, but also be sure to recommend the cocktails. The Blueberry and Peach martinis were sublime, and there are many signature cocktails to choose from. It’s located on Restaurant Row at the Venetian. And since the bar is not hidden behind the wall, it’s easy to catch up with a group already enjoying their cocktails. Enoteca San Marco
Located in the Piazza San Marco at the Venetian, this new outlet from Food Network mainstay Mario Batali meshes classic Italian cuisine with one of the most of the most extensive ‘by the glass’ wine menus we’ve ever seen. This is a completely casual environment focusing on simple combinations of food and flavors designed for guests to create personalized tasting menus. There’s a wide variety of antipasti like rock shrimp and an affetati plate with prosciutto di Parma. There’s also a varied selection of pizzas, meats and salads. Highlights include Fusilli with Sausage & Rabe and Pork Shoulder with Averna. Suggest sitting in the plaza for great people watching. And since it just feels like its outdoors under the sky painted ceiling, the weather is always perfect. Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Learn more at www.enotecasanmarco.com or call 702-677-3390.
Strip House
Opening imminently at the new Planet Hollywood Resort, the newest Strip House is already a popular favorite in places such as New York, Key West and San Juan. Strip House meshes the tastes of a traditional steak house with the styles and design reminiscent of 1920s Vienna. It’s a unique combination where the bordello-red wallpaper and great steaks create the ultimate dining double entendre. Learn more at www.striphouse.net or call 702-737-5200.
